What?
VoWiFi stands for Voice over Wi-Fi. It’s a technology that allows you to make and receive phone calls using a Wi-Fi network instead of your mobile carrier’s cellular network. Think of it as a way to use your phone’s regular dialer app to make calls, but the call travels through the internet via Wi-Fi rather than through a cell tower.
While the technical term is VoWiFi, you will most frequently see it labeled as Wi-Fi Calling in the settings menus of iOS and Android devices. The key point is that, VoWiFi is not an independent VoIP App in the phone, such as Skype, Line, Wechat and so on. When your phone and your celluar network operator support VoWiFi, you just call the phone number via Wi-Fi network. Don’t need to install a new App.
How?
When VoWiFi is enabled, your phone automatically detects when the cellular signal is weak and seamlessly switches to the available Wi-Fi network to handle your calls. The technology creates a secure, encrypted tunnel (using IPSec) between your phone and your carrier’s core network through the internet.
This is different from apps like WhatsApp, Skype, or FaceTime, which are over-the-top (OTT) services. VoWiFi uses the native phone dialer and integrates directly with your carrier’s network, so it feels just like a normal phone call.
